Week 39, 9-18-16

Thoughts and Quotes: Nothing beats a good drink, a good book, and listening to your favorite tunes again. Nothing.
                   Found on Giselle's blog, www.tothelighthousetheblog.com

Agreed. My drink choice is iced tea and my book choice is a good whodunit, a biography, a historical novel, or non-fiction. My favorite tunes are opera, New Age, classical,  or elevator music. How lucky I am that I was born now with an abundance of all these good things, but even with all this at my disposal, I've had a rather uneventful week.

I have a couple of things to share and then we're going to stroll down Memory Lane. You might want to grab your drink of choice, because this turned into a hike instead of a stroll.

Teaching and Learning: Today it's learning. I just discovered that Brother Dan's girlfriend Annie, has a grandson who is a gifted artist. He has an interesting video on his website, which explains his medium (one which is new to me). Click here. The explanation is under the "Paintings" heading. I'll be surprised if you've ever heard of this process.

Thank You: To Girlhood Friend Barbara, who brought me a wonderful gift when we met at our class reunion on Saturday. Her church had a fundraiser where they sold handmade greeting cards, made by the ladies. She brought me a packet and I'd like to show them to you.

I made only one card this week

Our reunions are held at Twin Oaks Country Club, and we always have buffet.

I think they were running out of cake, because the pieces were being cut smaller and smaller. Okay by me. I ate only half of this little piece.

We started out with picnics in the park, but due to the heat and bugs in September, we moved to a big church community center and did potluck. This was rather difficult, as many were coming from out of town. Now we just sit back and let someone else take care of things. We get smarter as we get older, do we not?

Time to Reflect: I've had an uneventful week, but the reunion had me thinking back to other times, so come along.

Things I miss since moving from California (besides my kids):

The mountains - this is Big Bear Lake

The sweet little college town of Claremont

Visiting the Buddhist Temple in Hacienda Heights. In their tea room is where I learned to eat peanut butter toast.

Eating at the Elephant Bar Restaurant

The Los Angeles County Fair

The Flower Show

The babies

The Tablescapes

The Handwork

Huntington Memorial Library

The Huntington mansion houses furniture, artifacts and a portrait gallery. You enter from the side.

The back veranda

The buidling added to house the library, ceramics, sculpture. They have one of the Gutenberg Bibles here. The building is large - two separate entrances.

The original Blue Boy and Pinkie are in the mansion, along with many other portraits, furniture, etc. and a fascinating collection of snuff boxes.

Cameras weren't allowed in the auxiliary building, where I fell in love with all the beautiful porcelains.

We loved having tea here. I have no photos of my own, but here is the link. You can then go to the home page for further exploring and a list of all the gardens.

Some of my photos of the Japanese Gardens.

Succulents and Cacti

Events like the Luau at the Senior Center

Home garden tours

Your feet must be tired by now, so we'll continue next week. I'll be getting ready for my son's arrival on Saturday, so I'll share more California things I miss. I can work on my post during the week, so that I'm not tied up on Sunday.

We'll go to Gardens of the World.

The Home and Garden Show

The Nethercutt Museum

We'll drop in on the Orchid Show

The Richard Nixon Presidential Library

The Ronald Reagan Presidential Library

I'll even take you onboard a container ship

And then we'll reminisce about how simple life is in a condo

And then after that we'll get back to more togs - I'm loving the way my closets are shaping up.

MAYBE WE CAN STILL MAKE A WISH ON THE FULL CORN MOON WHICH STARTED SEPTEMBER 16 (Sorry I forgot to tell you last week)

    1. I enjoyed it, too. Hadn't looked at these photos in ages. Made me a little homesick, however.

  2. You have been to some wonderful places, Patsy and you must have happy memories. Great displays, interesting buildings and beautiful gardens. I was interested in the Blue Boy painting as I have a costume jewelry brooch with a picture of it on. It was given to my mother by my father. I don't wear it, but enjoy looking at it. A sentimental keepsake. I hope this week is a good one for you.

You should visit California. Disneyland isn't just for kids, you know. One of my favorites places.
